“What’s a wellness activity and how does it help my recovery?” We’re asked this question almost daily. A large part of our programs focus on wellness activities and their substantial positive impact on personal recovery.
But what’s this impact look like? Do you or your loved one need wellness activities? More to the point, just what the heck are wellness activities?
That’s what we’re here to answer.
At The Good Life Treatment Center, we have created a comprehensive holistic program that addresses the body, mind, and spirit, backed by evidence-based research. Starting with ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) assessment criteria and considering the treatment service goals of our licensing body, we’ve blended adventure-based counseling, fitness, traditional medicine, culture, the arts, and volunteerism to help our clients heal on a grander scale.
We believe in the power of experience and the positive impact that our wellness program is making on our clients.
We are continually tracking outcomes and looking at potential improvement in developing strategies for managing triggers and cravings, improving confidence in decision making, reducing physical health concerns, and increasing motivation, problem solving skills, communication, and anger management. Our activities improve creative expression and relationships, and help people develop passion. On average, our data shows a 40 to 50% improvement in all of these areas!
We’re proud of the activities we offer and strive to take advantage of the beautiful landscape of South Florida. Our area is rich with natural areas and picturesque landscapes. People from all over the world are drawn here to heal by the sea, which is why we want to spend as much time there as possible. Additionally, we love to explore and try new things!
Facilitated by industry experts in recreation therapy, some of our adventure-based counseling activities:
The Good Life Treatment Center is all about great friends and great fun. We want to reintroduce you to the beauty in life through our people and community.
We keep up on current events and expose our clients to some of the following:

In addition to adventure therapy, we know how important and rewarding it is to give back and help others in need. Service is a primary component of a strong recovery program. We help you put your skills to good use, build compassion for others, and most importantly, learn to love yourself in the process.
Much like our primary addiction treatment programs, these are only our baseline activities. We’re always looking to expand and personalize what we offer. If there’s an activity you’d like included that isn’t listed above, give us a call today to discuss working it into you or your loved one’s treatment.
Now that we’ve answered the question of just what our wellness activities are, let’s take a look at some of their therapeutic benefits.
Addiction is a disease that affects all areas of someone’s life. It makes sense that treatment should do the same.
Rather than rely on only individual therapy, group therapy, informal workshops, and 12-step involvement to offer our clients sustained recovery, we’ve expanded our focus here at The Good Life Treatment Center.
This comprehensive approach is based on the latest research and our personal experience in recovery. The healing power of nature, personal care, and helping others can’t be overstated. They’re incredibly powerful forces that offer a deeper understanding of just who we are.
On the scientific side of things, physical exertion and challenges have been shown to offer a number of clinical benefits. These include:
Releasing dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that help the brain heal during early-recovery
Deepening the experiences and lessons learned during talk therapy and complimenting significant life changes
Offering a positive outlet for stress, anxiety, fear, and other emotions that can be harmful if dwelled on
Helping to monitor and relax the body after a day of intellectual exercise and helping to connect the mind and body
Facilitating a sense of community among clients — they work together in therapy and out of therapy towards a common goal
Finally, they’re just plain fun!
This last point — the pure fun of getting out and enjoying the natural world — may seem less important than the other benefits of wellness activities. This couldn’t be further from the truth!
One of the great joys of recovery is discovering how to have fun without chemicals and other harmful behaviors. Helping to facilitate this fun in a safe and secure environment is just one more unique benefit our wellness activities offer: The ability to discover constructive and healthy ways to enjoy life!
