Avoiding Alcohol This Valentine’s Day

Preventing Relapse During Valentine’s Day

While February can be a time of love and togetherness, it can be tough for those dealing with addiction issues. Whether you’re spending this holiday alone or with someone you love, there are plenty of ways to shift your focus this Valentine's Day away from love-filled festivities that involve alcohol.

Focus on What Makes the Day Special

While spending this Valentine’s Day sober may alter your day’s plans, it doesn’t have to take away what this love-filled holiday represents. Take some time to show the people in your life that you love, care for, and appreciate them! You can also take some time to show yourself some love too, acknowledging how far you’ve come in your sobriety journey.

Be Present & Make New Memories

Though it may feel like you’re missing out on making a toast with the one you love, reminiscing on old memories—making new ones is equally as important. Rather than focusing on the things you can’t do anymore, shift your attention to what you have right now and what you’re grateful for.

Plan a Date that Doesn’t Involve Alcohol

When you’re struggling with alcohol addiction, it can feel like you can’t escape alcohol—it’s everywhere from restaurants to dine-in movie theaters. If you’re newer to resisting the temptation of alcohol, it may be worth planning your day to involve activities where you won’t encounter it at all.

Some fun alcohol-free activities to enjoy this Valentine’s Day include:

  • Go on picnic
  • Take a long nature walk or walk on the beach
  • Plan a horse-drawn carriage ride
  • Take pottery class
  • Paint together
  • Go to a drive-in movie
