What Makes A Good Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

You’re probably enduring some of the hardest times of your life if you’re searching for a Drug and Alcohol Treatment and Rehabilitation Program. Whether it's for yourself or a loved one, its simply overwhelming, discouraging, and stressful. There are so many treatment centers claiming to be the best, boasting their fancy facilities, and guaranteeing recovery. While there are many great programs out there, there are just as many that are simply insurance scams. You’re probably asking yourself “how do I tell the difference?” In this article, we aim to give you some basic clues to determining the quality of care and the overall success of any prospective programs. So just what makes A Good Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

What Makes a Good Drug and Alcohol Rehab Center?

When you’re looking at the different types of substance abuse treatment programs, it’s important to consider that everyone’s situation is well, a little different.  If someone used drugs very intensely over a long period of time, they may need very intense treatment over a long period of time. Nonetheless, the length of the program in weeks or months does not negate the importance of long-term follow-up.  A quality drug and alcohol treatment program not only addresses the addiction it also addresses trauma, emotional pain,  and any other underlying life problems which could contribute to a person’s addiction.

How to Find a Qualified Treatment Center

When you find yourself in the troublesome situation that forces you to seek substance-abuse treatment for yourself or a family member, it is common to see advertisements for Treatment Centers in peaceful settings with fancy amenities and great views. While some of these programs may be great, these are not the things that make a “good rehab”. There is no connection between luxury and success. It is imperative to focus on what is really important: quality of individual care, licensing, follow up/alumni programs,  as well as the clinical staff’s credentials.

  • It’s crucial to verify that the rehab is accredited by the state where its located. Also, make certain that the program is run by licensed, properly-trained addiction/mental health professionals.
  • Is there a comprehensive aftercare program? Does it help provide referrals to other addiction treatment programs and 12 step organizations in the community? This is one of the most important aspects of any treatment center. In order for long-term recovery to be successful, a discharge plan must be in place, one to which the client can realistically comply. A good clinical staff teams closely with their clients and their families to make certain that strong outpatient programs are ready to welcome their clients upon being discharged from inpatient treatment.
  • Success rates? The success of a treatment facility doesn’t mean how many clients complete the program, it means how many people stay clean and sober after leaving. There is NO facility that can honestly claim 100% (or even 90%) success. If they do, they are likely pulling your leg. Look for facilities that are forthcoming about their relapse numbers and who have implemented solid relapse prevention programs to help their alumni.

Trust Your Gut

Go with your gut feeling! When shopping for the right treatment program you will likely call phone numbers from advertisements online and may encounter pushy salespeople who seem to promise you the world. While some of these may be decent places, it’s important to ask yourself “do these people truly seem to want to help me?” If the first question they ask revolves around getting your insurance information, chances are that you may want to keep shopping.
